Padel for Tennis Players

What tennis skills transfer to padel and what you need to unlearn.

Home Padel for Tennis Players

Tennis players pick up padel faster than complete beginners. Your footwork, fitness, court reading and racket sense all transfer. But several things need to be unlearned, and getting the gear right from the start makes the transition much smoother.

What transfers from tennis

  • Fitness and movement: Court coverage, split steps and lateral movement all carry over.
  • Racket sense: Your hand-eye coordination and timing are ahead of a complete beginner.
  • Volley technique: Continental grip volleys transfer well. You will feel at home at the net.
  • Scoring and rules: Scoring is identical. You will not need to learn a new system.
  • Reading the game: Tactical awareness, especially in doubles, transfers from tennis doubles.

What does not transfer

  • The serve: Overhead serves are banned in padel. You must learn the underarm serve from scratch.
  • Wall play: The ball bouncing off glass walls behaves differently from what you expect. This takes time.
  • Net positioning: In padel you stand much closer to the net. Adjusting takes a few sessions.
  • The bandeja: A padel-specific smash used to defend lobs. No tennis equivalent. Learn it early.
  • Court size: The smaller court means less running but faster exchanges. Movement patterns differ.

What gear to buy as a tennis player starting padel

Do not buy an advanced racket because you play tennis well. Start with an intermediate round or teardrop racket. Your technique from tennis does not directly translate to padel mechanics, and a forgiving racket will help you develop the right habits.

For shoes, your tennis shoes will work temporarily but padel-specific shoes offer better lateral support and the right outsole for artificial grass. See our best padel shoes guide.

How long does it take to get good?

Most tennis players can hold their own in social padel games within 5 to 10 sessions. Getting genuinely competitive at club level takes longer, mainly because of wall play and the bandeja. Six months of regular play will get most tennis players to a solid intermediate level.
